Visual studies

In today’s session, we first saw some of the teacher’s work. Then we learnt basic drawing techniques. We learnt composition techniques, how to draw with pencil, personal style choices and other topics. Learned about gesture drawing and how to draw properly.

Before the course, I had not done any systematic study of drawing and had only done a lot of experimentation with my own interests. After this class, I hope that I will soon find my own style of drawing and that I will be able to draw in a correct and interesting way.

PPD Questions:

1:What do you think are some important skills to have so as to draw and design well?

I think a few key skills to drawing and designing well are, first of all, to have good observation skills, to be able to see things well as a whole as well as in detail when you see them. Also, I think it is important to have the ability to sketch with lines, to be able to show exactly what you want to draw, and at the same time to be able to have your own personal style. For design, I think it is also important to be able to analyse the lines, to be able to break down the shapes that you see and use them yourself, I think it requires some association and creative ability.

2:What are your strengths and weaknesses in drawing?

I think my strengths in the painting are first of all that I have not experienced special training and have not developed some inherent format for painting. I draw as I go along and the lines I use look more free and varied. As I am still in the process of figuring out my personal style, my drawing style is quite different and I feel that there are still many possibilities for me in the drawing. But the downside is that I sometimes draw too abstractly, which is not easy to understand, and I can be rather lacking in detail, not knowing how to draw the textural folds of clothes, etc. However, I believe that in the future I will be able to further improve my drawing skills.

3:We spoke about the importance of looking. What actions could you take to help you look at and document the world around you?

If I see something interesting in my everyday life, the first thing I do is take a picture of it with my phone camera, for example. Photography is a quick, easy and accurate way to record interesting things. I also have my own little drawing book that I use for design or illustration practice. I also use drawings to record my thoughts and my moods. This way I can record my thoughts on life and practice my drawing skills at the same time.
